Description
This piece is a glass ampoule with elements in over-gilded bronze containing the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Pantaleon.
Pantaleon was one of the martyrs persecuted during the government of Emperor Diocletian. According to the account of tradition, the saint of Nicomedia was cruelly decapitated at the foot of a withered fig tree, which blossomed upon coming into contact with his blood.
The miracle of the liquefaction of the saint's blood is a cause for celebration in the Salernitan town of Ravello, which takes place on the 27th of July. This same feast is celebrated in the monastery of the Encarnación in Madrid, founded by Doña Margarita de Austria, where a relic with the saint's blood is also kept.
