Descrición

This piece is a sun-shaped monstrance with a circular base, executed in over-gilded bronze and decorated with jeweled elements and enamels. It is a piece made by a Castilian workshop toward the first half of the 17th century, which initially only featured decoration using enamels and gemstones.

As for its structure, the piece rests upon a circular base and has an elongated knok reminiscent of a vase shape. At the top, a glass lunette contains within it the corresponding crescent-shaped piece. The sun is topped by a large cross with set glass stones.

Numerous jeweled elements were added at a later date, coming from a dress, probably belonging to Doña Catalina de la Cerda y Sandoval, which lend an original appearance to the ensemble. With regard to these striking elements, pieces of gemstones, seed pearls, coral, and crystals are combined, with a predominance of pearlescent and reddish tones. The result is a stunning piece, of great beauty and originality.
